shafts-of-standing-light
Shafts of Standing Light

Shafts of Standing Light holds the moment a great railway hall turns into a cathedral of light. Three tall windows pour down over a vast concourse, and on the acrylic glass that fall of light becomes a field of individual marks, dense and luminous where the beams land, thinning into darkness where the vault climbs away overhead.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built by removing rather than adding, so the architecture rises out of controlled surface damage instead of pigment. The three shafts are not drawn, they are opened, a field of fine scratches carved until the light seems to stand in the room on its own.

The image is always present, with or without a lamp aimed at it. Light does not create the image, it sharpens it. Under direct light the scratched surface catches and reflects, the shafts gain depth and the contrast deepens, and the work reads differently from one angle to the next without ever losing what it shows.

Within that falling light stand small dark figures, each one a silhouette cut clean out of the glow, untouched by the scratch work around it. They are commuters, strangers, a crowd that exists only for the seconds it takes to cross that pool of light, and the piece holds them there permanently, caught between arrival and disappearance in a hall built for neither.

From across a room the piece reads as pure architecture, a monumental fall of light inside a cavernous dark. Step closer and that light dissolves into a field of fine scratches, countless individual passes that only resolve again once the eye steps back, the same tension between the grand and the granular that runs through the whole Art with Scratch series.

Shafts of Standing Light continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"Some light is not meant to move you forward.
