sentinels-of-the-drowning-line
Sentinels of the Drowning Line

Sentinels of the Drowning Line begins where the land gives up. Old breakwater timbers stand shoulder to shoulder in the surf, worn to bone, each post wearing its collar of foam as the water rises and falls around it. They are not ruins. They are guards that never left their post.

A single hard light falls from above, the way it might fall in an old master's studio. Everything else recedes into a deep, pure black. The timbers hold their ground in that darkness, the surf breaking white against them, fine grain and drifting dust caught midair like something remembered rather than seen.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built through controlled scratches rather than anything added. Here, damage is not destruction, but structure, the very thing that lets the timbers keep standing.

The image is always present, from the first glance to the last. Light does not create it. It sharpens it. Under direct light the scratches catch and reflect, the contrast deepens, and the surf seems to lift off the black. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the timbers or the line they hold.

From across the room the work reads as one monumental scene, a row of sentinels set against the dark. Come closer and that scene resolves into a field of controlled surface damage, mark after mark, the same patience that once drove the posts into the seabed.

There is a quiet loyalty in old timber that keeps its post long after the tide it was built to hold back has changed. Sentinels of the Drowning Line continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print.

"The line moves. The sentinels do not."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/0724/0005/files/Sentinels_of_the_Drowning_Line_thumbnail.jpg?v=1786918087
