No paint, no print, no ink comes near this surface. What remains is drawn through controlled scratches set into a deep blue coloured mirror glass, a colour that carries the weight of the sea itself, its pressure, its cold, its distance from anything that breathes.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA thin bright rim marks the collar where the brass would catch the last available light, while everything beyond gives way to darkness, an absolute black void that presses in from every edge. The helmet sits centred within the frame but never fills it, so the emptiness around it becomes as much the subject as the helmet itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe scratches are always present, in daylight as much as in shadow. Light does not create this image, it sharpens it: under a raking beam the rim gains depth and the contrast between brass and black deepens. What shifts with the room is only the reflection around the work, never the image itself, cut into the surface of the coloured glass.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThat reflection is where you step into the piece. Around the helmet, in the field of blue between the scratches, the room and your own outline gather, so that looking at a helmet built to seal against the deep also means finding yourself standing at its threshold. From across a room the work reads as one still, monumental object; up close it resolves into a dense field of controlled surface damage.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSealed Against the Deep continues the Art on Mirror series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which scratched imagery is set into coloured mirror glass and the viewer becomes part of the work.
