ridges-scratched-from-black-water
Ridges Scratched From Black Water

Ridges Scratched From Black Water does not show a crocodile so much as it withholds one. Out of an almost total darkness, a single ridge of broken light rises where armoured skin meets the surface, and everything else stays submerged, guessed at, left to the water.

Nothing here was added. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, a field of individual marks built up until the bony ridges, the raised eye and the long closed jaw emerge from removal rather than from paint or print. The black is simply where the surface was left untouched.

What the work keeps is the threshold itself, that thin seam where an animal built for patience lets just enough of itself show. The eye catches the light and holds it, calm and unblinking, while the rest of the body dissolves back into black water before it even reaches the teeth. It reads as a study in restraint, of power that announces itself by showing almost nothing.

The image is always present, in any light. Direct light makes the scratches catch and shine, and the contrast deepens, the ridges and the eye pulling further forward out of the dark. In softer light the same ridge settles back toward stillness, quiet rather than gone. Light does not create the image. It sharpens it.

From across a room the piece reads as a single, monumental form breaking a field of black, a shape the eye completes before it understands why. Close up, that shape dissolves into a field of fine scratches, controlled surface damage that only resolves into a crocodile again once you step back, the way the animal itself resolves out of water only when it chooses to.

Ridges Scratched From Black Water continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print.

"What stays hidden is not absent. It is simply waiting at the surface."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/0724/0005/files/Ridges_Scratched_From_Black_Water_thumbnail.jpg?v=1793570938
