napoleon-grown-from-shadow
Napoleon Grown From Shadow

A hat folded from a single sheet of paper sits crooked on a boy's head, and one of his hands is already out of sight, tucked inside the front of his coat. It is a child's private costume, invented for an afternoon, and nothing about his stance asks to be taken seriously.

The light that holds him is not soft. It cuts across the floor in a hard wedge and climbs the wall behind him, every inch of it built from a field of fine scratches that gathers what little light there is and will not let it go. Outside that wedge the room stays unscratched and absolute, a black with nothing left in it.

His shadow begins where any child's shadow begins, flat at his heels. It crosses the floor honestly enough, then climbs the wall and keeps climbing past the height a boy could ever throw, until it settles into a bicorne hat and a greatcoat and a hand pressed into a waistcoat exactly where the boy has already pressed his own.

That repetition is the quiet joke of the piece. The boy's small private gesture and the general's famous one share the same shape, one grown far beyond what a boy could ever cast on his own, and the eye cannot decide which figure taught the other how to stand. The child seems to rehearse a greatness he has not earned, or the shadow seems to remember a gesture it learned from him first.

Napoleon Grown From Shadow belongs to Look Twice, a series within Art with Scratch by Tijs Dragtsma in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print, and in which that same damage becomes a way of letting a child's own gesture rehearse a greatness his shadow has not yet earned, until the eye can no longer say which one taught the other its pose.

No paint, no print, no ink. The image is held entirely in a field of individual marks worked into the acrylic glass, present at every hour and in every light. Direct light does not create it, it sharpens it, deepening the contrast between the boy's small dark shape and the towering one behind him. From across a room the work reads as one wedge of light holding two figures. Close up, it dissolves into the marks that built it.

"The hat is paper. The shadow is not."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/0724/0005/files/Napoleon_Grown_From_Shadow_thumbnail.jpg?v=1793570913
