napoleon-before-the-tide
Napoleon Before the Tide

He stands with his back to us, the bicorne hat and the long grey coat enough to say everything. No face is needed. Napoleon Bonaparte is carried entirely by silhouette and stance, by the set of the shoulders and the hands clasped behind him, a gesture of command that has nowhere left to command. Before him the sea moves, restless and indifferent, the one force he cannot negotiate with.

In this work the figure is held as a field of fine scratches across acrylic glass, the coat's folds and the crest of the hat picked out where the surface catches light, the rest left in untouched dark. No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, present at every hour, not waiting for a spotlight to exist.

From across a room the composition reads as pure monument, a solitary figure fixed against the tide. Step closer and that certainty dissolves into a field of individual marks, each one small and deliberate, none of them alone describing a man. The image is always present. Light gives it depth: under direct light the scratches catch and reflect, and the contrast deepens. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the image.

What the work withholds is as important as what it shows. There is no expression to read, no eyes to meet. Only the outline of power turned away, watching water that will keep moving long after empires end. It is less a portrait than a meditation on the moment before a fall, the stillness just before history turns.

This piece continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. Light does not create the image. It sharpens it. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

This work is unique.

"Even an emperor, from behind, is only a man facing the water."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.
