manneken-pis-in-the-green
Manneken Pis in the Green

Manneken Pis is the smallest celebrity in Brussels, a boy caught forever mid mischief on his pedestal, more loved than almost any monument twice his size. Art on Mirror takes that cheek and sets it into deep green coloured mirror glass, keeping the gesture and the grin and leaving everything else to the dark.

The boy survives as a field of individual marks, a thick white contour around the small body, the curls, the stance, and a thin scattered line of dots that trace his arc of water down into the void below. Light falls only on one side of him, so that side gathers a coarse field of fine scratches while the rest of the figure stays a solid black silhouette, as if half of him were still bronze in shadow and half were catching a passing lamp.

Green is not decoration here. It is the colour bronze turns after years outdoors, the patina that settles on a statue loved by too many hands and too much weather, so the glass itself becomes a second skin for a figure the city has watched age for centuries.

Nothing is painted and nothing is printed. The image is shaped by removing the surface rather than adding to it, a field of fine scratches cut into the surface of the green glass rather than applied onto it, so it is there in full daylight and in an empty room alike. Light does not create the image. It sharpens it, deepening the contrast where the lamp finds it and letting the rest settle back into the green dark.

Because the surface is mirrored, the room keeps arriving in it. Whoever stands in front of this small, impertinent boy sees their own outline drawn into the same green behind him, caught mid glance the way he is caught mid gesture, part of the joke rather than only watching it.

This piece continues the Art on Mirror series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which scratched imagery is set into coloured mirror glass and the viewer becomes part of the work. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure, and where the mirror turns looking into taking part.

"Even a monument this small can turn a whole room green with mischief."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/0724/0005/files/Manneken_Pis_in_the_Green_thumbnail.jpg?v=1793570995
