leonardo-in-vitruvian-light
Leonardo in Vitruvian Light

Leonardo in Vitruvian Light places the artist inside his own invention. The circle and the square that once measured the ideal human body now surround an old man standing with his arms open, as though he has stepped into the diagram he gave the world and is, in turn, being measured by it.

Here the geometry carries the light. The circle and square are held by a field of fine scratches, bright and continuous, while the figure within them stays mostly in shadow. His face and his long white beard catch the light as a quiet glow, a presence rather than a likeness, and his hands surface briefly where the reaching arms meet the circle's edge.

The robe, the body, the weight of the man, these are let go into darkness. What remains is proportion itself, the idea that a human being can be read through number and shape. Leonardo spent a lifetime searching for that order. In this work he becomes part of it, almost absorbed by the very measure he once used to explain the world.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is formed through controlled surface damage on acrylic glass, a field of individual marks that hold the circle, the square and the old man together. The image is always present, it does not need direct light to exist. Light does not create it. It sharpens it, deepening the contrast between the glowing geometry and the man who dissolves into it.

From a distance the work reads as a single luminous diagram, monumental and still. Up close it becomes a surface built from a field of fine scratches, each one part of a larger structure, the same tension between order and fragility that runs through Leonardo's own search for the perfect proportion of man.

Leonardo in Vitruvian Light continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. This work is unique.

"A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/0724/0005/files/Leonardo_in_Vitruvian_Light_thumbnail.jpg?v=1791175540
