leashed-to-his-own-shadow
Leashed to His Own Shadow

Seen from behind, a man walks across a field of fine scratches, and ahead of him, stretched far beyond his own height, moves a shadow he holds on a leash. The shadow is not smaller than him, as shadows usually are. It is larger, longer, almost its own figure, leading as much as being led.

In this work the surface itself becomes the light. The ground the two figures stand on is a field of individual marks, worked into the acrylic glass until it holds a quiet glow, and out of that glow the man and his shadow are left dark, untouched, cut away rather than drawn in. No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface, and it is always there, present even without a spotlight aimed at it.

What makes the piece hold your attention is the question it will not answer. Is he walking the shadow, or is the shadow pulling him along, patient and oversized, waiting for the moment the leash runs out. The longer a shadow grows, the more it seems to lead rather than follow, and here that reversal is built directly into the composition.

From a distance the scene reads as a single calm gesture, two dark shapes joined by a thin curved line against a luminous ground. Step closer and that ground resolves into a field of individual marks, each one part of the light that holds the figures in place. Light does not create the image here. It sharpens it, deepening the contrast between the man, his shadow, and the surface that carries them both.

Leashed to His Own Shadow continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure, used here to ask what it means to carry your own darkness on a line, always a step behind you, always a step ahead.

"Some things cannot be left behind. They can only be walked, carefully, on a leash of your own making."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/0724/0005/files/Leashed_to_His_Own_Shadow_thumbnail.jpg?v=1791175550
