john-wick-in-shadowed-fury
John Wick in Shadowed Fury

Out of near total black, a face resolves. Only the upper half catches light, forehead, brow, the hard line of a stare pulled down and inward. The rest of him dissolves into shadow, as if the darkness itself is holding something back.

This is John Wick in Shadowed Fury, a portrait built on restraint rather than action. There is no motion here, no weapon, no chase, only the moment before, when a man's fury has already been decided and is simply waiting to be spent.

No paint. No print. No ink. The face is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built from controlled scratches, each one a small removal rather than an addition. The image exists because material was taken away, not because anything was laid on top of it.

The portrait is always present, in a bright room or a dim one. Light does not create the image. It sharpens it. Under a direct light source the scratches catch and hold, the contrast deepens, and the eyes settle further into the brow, while the piece still reads differently from every angle.

From across a room the work reads as a single, monumental face, steady and unmoving. Step closer and that same face breaks into a field of controlled surface damage, fine marks that only resolve into a likeness once you step back again.

Wick's fury has always been cold rather than loud, a violence trained into stillness. Rendered in a surface that had to be taken apart to hold his likeness, that idea gains another layer: control, here, is also a kind of damage, and damage, worked with intention, becomes structure rather than ruin.

John Wick in Shadowed Fury continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print.

"Fury does not need to shout to be seen."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/0724/0005/files/John_Wick_in_Shadowed_Fury_thumbnail.jpg?v=1789333684
