houdini-bound-in-light
Houdini Bound in Light

Out of a deep black ground, a face gathers itself from a field of fine scratches. The curls hold the most light, a crown of fine marks above a brow that stays half in shadow, while the eyes keep their dark even as the cheekbones and collar brighten around them. Below, two open hands and a chain crossing into a padlock are drawn the same way, a field of individual marks where the metal catches light and the coat falls back into black.

Harry Houdini died on 31 October 1926, on Halloween; 2026 marks the centenary of his death.

In his last years he turned his gift for deception against those who used it to prey on grief, exposing the fraudulent mediums who claimed to speak with the dead. After he died, his widow kept a seance every year on the date of his death, waiting ten years for a sign that never came. That quiet, unanswered watch sits behind this portrait, a man who could escape almost anything except the dark that follows a life.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built from a field of fine scratches that gathers where the light should fall and leaves the rest to the dark. It is a portrait made by removal, not by addition, the opposite of how a face is usually put down.

Houdini Bound in Light belongs to In Their Year, a series within Art with Scratch by Tijs Dragtsma in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print, and in which that same damage becomes a way of telling a well known life through one true detail rather than its familiar pose.

The image is always present, in full room light and in the dark. Light does not create it, it sharpens it, the scratches catching and reflecting until the contrast deepens and the chains seem to close further over the chest. Seen from across a room the portrait reads as one figure bound in light and shadow; up close it dissolves into a field of scratches. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"Even he could not escape the dark that follows a life."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.
