her-veil-outruns-the-night
Her Veil Outruns the Night

In the black shallows, a woman rides a great white bull toward the edge of the night. Her veil lifts behind her, caught by a wind that seems to come from nowhere and everywhere at once. A single hard light falls from above, cutting the scene out of a background of pure, unbroken black. Everything else has been stripped away so that only this moment remains, flight, defiance, and grace held in the same breath.

The image carries an old story inside it, one of a woman carried off by a beast that is not entirely a beast, and who somehow leads rather than follows. Her veil trails behind her like a measure of time she is outrunning. She does not look back. In Her Veil Outruns the Night, the darkness is not a threat closing in, it is the distance she is already leaving behind.

No paint. No print. No ink. This image exists because of what was taken away, not what was added. Every line of the bull's shoulder, every fold of the veil, every grain of dust suspended in that hard beam of light, is built from controlled scratches worked into the surface of acrylic glass. The picture is not applied onto the surface, it is drawn out of it, scratch by scratch, until a woman on a white bull steps forward from black glass.

The image is always there, in full daylight as much as in shadow. Light does not create it. It sharpens it. Under direct light the scratches catch and hold that light, the contrast deepens, and the white bull seems to gather more of the glow than the dark around it. Move around the piece and it reads differently from every angle, without ever losing the woman, the bull, or the veil at its center.

From across a room the work reads as a single, monumental gesture, cinematic and old master in its weight. Step closer and that gesture dissolves into a field of individual scratches, each one small and deliberate, none of them alone telling the story that all of them tell together.

Her Veil Outruns the Night continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"She is not fleeing the dark. She is outrunning it."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/0724/0005/files/Her_Veil_Outruns_the_Night_thumbnail.jpg?v=1791175367
