held-at-the-threshold
Held at the Threshold

A doorway of pure white light cuts through the dark, narrow and upright, like a seam opened in the night itself. One figure stands inside it, reduced to a black silhouette against the glow. Beside the doorway, just outside the light, a second figure in pale clothing waits in the dark. Their hands meet exactly at the edge, where the light ends and the shadow begins.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, a field of individual marks shaped by removal rather than addition. The glow of the doorway is not painted brightness, it is abrasion, a surface worked until it holds light the way skin holds warmth.

The image is always present. Light gives it depth, under direct illumination the scratches catch and reflect, and the contrast deepens. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the two figures or the line that joins them. Light does not create the image. It sharpens it.

From across a room the work reads as a single monumental shape, a vertical column of light holding two human forms at its edge. Step closer and that column dissolves into a field of fine scratches, each one part of the glow, none of them visible on its own.

The subject is simple and old, two people, a threshold, a hand that will not let go. One is already claimed by the light, the other still belongs to the dark, and the only bridge between them is touch. It is a quiet image about what we hold onto at the edge of change, and what we are willing to let take us.

Held at the Threshold continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"Some thresholds are crossed alone. This one is held by two hands."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.
