hands-scratched-into-longing
Hands Scratched Into Longing

A single coin hangs in the dark, already falling, already too late to call back. Above it a hand rests inside a white cuff, fingers closed to the exact size of the gift it has chosen to give. Below it a crowd of hands opens to the size of everything they do not have.

The cuffed hand does not reach. It does not need to. It stays at the top of the frame with the stillness of something that has already decided, letting one coin go the way a tap is turned, a small motion that costs it nothing and asks for nothing back.

Underneath, the hands rise in rows, fingers spread, wrists straining past one another, each one certain that this coin, this one, is meant for it. They are shaped as a field of fine scratches set directly into the acrylic glass, so that from a distance they read as one bright shape reaching upward, and only up close do they separate into the many individual hands that make it.

No paint, no print, no ink was used to build this image. The cuff, the closed fingers, the single coin and the crowd beneath it exist because the surface has had something taken from it, controlled surface damage held in the acrylic glass rather than placed on top of it.

The image is present at any hour, in any light. Light does not create it, it sharpens it, so the cuff and the raised hands catch the most and hold it, while the space between the giving hand and the waiting ones stays almost entirely dark. It reads differently from different angles, the contrast deepening under direct light without ever losing the shape beneath it.

Hands Scratched Into Longing belongs to In Plain Sight, a series within Art with Scratch by Tijs Dragtsma in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print, and in which that same damage becomes a way of asking how little it takes, one coin, one closed hand, to set so many hands reaching at once.

What the piece withholds says as much as what it shows. No face appears above the cuff, and none below it either, so the only thing left to recognise is need itself, held up and waiting to be chosen.

"One hand decides. Many hands hope."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/0724/0005/files/Hands_Scratched_Into_Longing_thumbnail.jpg?v=1791705285
