The staircase, the bridge and every one of the walking figures are scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, formed through controlled surface damage rather than added onto it. The image is present exactly as it is, in daylight or in shadow, whether or not any light is aimed at it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLight does not create this staircase. It sharpens it. Under a direct source the steps catch and hold the glow, the contrast deepens, and the procession of figures grows almost architectural, precise as a blueprint of ascent. Move around the piece and it reads differently again, never absent, only quieter or more defined.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFrom across a room the work resolves into pure structure, a bridge of light cutting through black space. Come closer and that certainty breaks apart into a field of controlled scratches, marks that only settle back into a staircase and a crowd of climbing figures once the eye steps away again.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe figures carry the meaning of the piece. Anonymous, unhurried, each one alone even inside the group, they climb toward a horizon that offers no visible end, only more darkness ahead.
