elvis-through-scratched-light
Elvis Through Scratched Light

Elvis Through Scratched Light begins where photography ends. The quiff, the curled lip, the famous profile caught close to an old microphone, none of it sits printed on the acrylic glass. It is scratched into the surface itself, through controlled surface damage, not applied onto it.

The quiff and the line of the cheekbone hold the brightest field of fine scratches, the place where the light gathers and the portrait becomes unmistakably him. The eyes, the collar and the deep black ground are left untouched, so the face comes forward out of darkness instead of being lit from outside it. What the work keeps is the face itself, what it lets go is detail. There is no skin texture, no studio sheen, only the structure of a face shaped from marks and the dark that surrounds it.

The microphone stays mostly in shadow, a dark form with just enough scratched highlight along its grille to be recognised. It becomes less an object than an idea, the barrier between the man and the myth, the instrument that turned a voice into a legend. Elvis looks past it, half in light, half withheld, the way icons so rarely let themselves be fully seen.

Seen from across a room, Elvis Through Scratched Light reads as a single, monumental face suspended in black. Step closer and that face opens into a field of individual marks, each one placed, none of them accidental. Light does not create this image. It sharpens it, deepening the contrast and giving the scratches their shine, while the portrait itself never leaves the surface it is held in.

The work continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure. This work is unique.

"The light does not make him. It only lets him through."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/0724/0005/files/Elvis_Through_Scratched_Light_thumbnail.jpg?v=1791705198
