einstein-caught-in-flame
Einstein Caught in Flame

Einstein Caught in Flame begins with a face the world already knows, then takes almost everything away. What remains is not a photograph but a field of fine scratches held in acrylic glass, where the hair around Einstein's head catches the light like a crown set alight, and the face sinks into a dark so complete it becomes its own kind of silhouette.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, so the famous halo of hair is built from a field of individual marks rather than a single line. Light does not create the image. It sharpens it, drawing the white flame of hair forward while the eyes and the deep folds of the face stay held in shadow.

That contrast is the real subject here. Einstein is remembered as the mind that bent light itself, who saw energy where others saw mass and made the universe stranger and more luminous than anyone expected. His own image is formed the same way, not by adding, but by taking the surface away until what is left behaves like light.

From across the room the work reads as a monument, an unmistakable likeness, calm and large in the dark. Step closer and that certainty opens into a field of scratches, fine and deliberate, that only resolves into a face again once you step back. The portrait reads differently from different angles, moving between clarity and texture without ever losing the image.

The work continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. Here that method becomes its own quiet argument, that genius, like light, is something seen at a distance and lost the moment you try to hold it too closely. This work is unique.

"Even a mind that reshaped the universe is, in the end, only light and shadow."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.
