aperture-of-control
Aperture of Control

Aperture of Control begins in darkness, with a single figure seated in silence. He is a director in every detail, the tailored suit, the composure, the stillness of someone who has spent a lifetime watching rather than being watched. Tonight the roles are reversed.

He holds an empty film frame before his face. No film runs through it, no image is projected, only one eye visible through the opening, studying the viewer the way he might study a scene before he calls it finished. The frame is empty, yet it is the most commanding object in the room.

This work is not painted or printed. It exists through controlled scratches worked directly into acrylic glass, the same principle that runs through the whole series. The image is not added to the surface, it is taken from it. Light finds the marks and releases the figure, then the light shifts and he recedes back into the dark, as if the frame itself decides when to let him be seen.

From a distance the piece reads as a single monumental portrait, poised and certain. Move closer and that certainty dissolves into a quiet field of controlled surface damage, countless individual decisions that only resolve into a face when the eye steps back again. That tension between authorship and illusion, between what is shown and what is withheld, is the real subject of the piece.

The empty frame becomes a question about control itself. Who directs the image, the man behind it or the light that reveals him. Aperture of Control continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"The frame is empty. The eye is not."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.
