a-voyage-small-enough-to-spill
A Voyage Small Enough to Spill

A teacup sits in darkness, and inside it, a small sailing boat holds its course across a surface no wider than a single sip. The scale is tender and absurd at once, a vessel built for oceans, set loose in a cup meant for someone's morning.

No paint. No print. No ink. The rim of the cup is formed from a field of individual marks, controlled scratches worked into acrylic glass until the curve of porcelain seems to hold its own light. The handle catches the same treatment, curling out of the dark like a line drawn in frost. Beneath it all, a long shadow stretches across the table, built the same way, light against black, presence against absence.

The body of the cup stays almost entirely dark, a deep well that the eye has to lean into. Only the rim, the handle, and that one small boat are allowed to shine. Everything else is given over to shadow, which is its own kind of generosity, it lets the small things matter more.

There is a quiet domestic danger in the image, the idea that an entire voyage, with its wind and its risk and its distance, could be happening in something you might set down absentmindedly beside your elbow. It asks what else moves unnoticed at the edges of ordinary things, and whether scale has ever really measured what matters.

The image is always present, not waiting for a spotlight to exist. Light does not create it. It sharpens it, deepening the contrast, letting the boat's sails catch and hold the eye a little longer. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the voyage at its center.

A Voyage Small Enough to Spill continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"Some journeys only need the width of a cup."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/0724/0005/files/A_Voyage_Small_Enough_to_Spill_thumbnail.jpg?v=1793570754
