No brow, no eyes, no mouth, just the fall of cloth over an absence, held in a field of fine light against a red mirrored ground.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe image is not printed onto the glass, nor painted across it. It is scratched into the surface of deep red coloured mirror glass, a field of individual marks that catch and hold the light until the folds of the veil emerge, monumental from a distance, a field of controlled scratches up close.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRed carries the weight here. It is the colour beneath the veil, the warmth and the wound both, the colour of a body implied but never shown. Against that red, the white of the veil does not soften the image, it isolates it, a single pale form standing alone in a room the colour of held breath.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBecause the image sits in the surface of the mirror, not applied onto it, the room around the work and the person standing in front of it are drawn into the same red field. The viewer's own reflection gathers at the edges and moves through the gaps between the marks, so that looking at the veil becomes, quietly, a way of standing inside it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLight does not create this image. It sharpens it. Under direct light the scratches catch and deepen, the folds gain depth and the contrast tightens. Change the light in the room and only the reflection shifts, the veil itself, faceless and still, remains exactly where it was.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA Veil Without a Face asks a simple, uneasy question: what is a portrait when the face is withheld. The work offers no eyes to meet and no expression to read, only the shape of a presence, and the certainty that someone is standing there.
