a-tangle-lit-by-thousands
A Tangle Lit by Thousands

Seen from above, the interchange has the calm, impersonal order of something designed rather than lived in. Its ramps curl back on themselves, cross, separate, and rejoin, a knot of motion held perfectly still. What should be ordinary, cars moving toward work, toward home, toward nothing in particular, becomes from this height a pattern with the gravity of a constellation.

Every one of those lights is a person, someone mid journey, thinking about a meeting, a phone call, an argument not yet finished. From this distance none of that is visible. What remains is the shape they make together, a field of individual marks drawn tight into loops and lines, indistinguishable from one another, carrying the same weight as the road beneath them.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, the lanes and their lights built from a field of fine scratches worked close together where the traffic gathers, and left further apart where the road runs quiet. From across a room it reads as one continuous web of light suspended in black. Up close, that web breaks apart into the marks that made it.

The image does not wait for a lamp to find it. It is present in ordinary daylight as much as after dark, scratched into the acrylic glass itself, not applied onto its surface. Direct light does not summon it. Light does not create the image. It sharpens it, deepening the glow of the loops and the black that holds them. The work reads differently as the angle of the room shifts, without ever losing the image first seen.

A Tangle Lit by Thousands belongs to A Matter of Scale, a series within Art with Scratch by Tijs Dragtsma in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print, and in which that same damage becomes a way of setting a single morning back against the size of the crowd that carries it, calmly, without any of them noticing how small they have become.

Most people who stand in front of this work have, somewhere in the last few days, made something small feel enormous: a delayed reply, a comment misread, an appointment running late. The interchange does not argue with that feeling, it simply offers scale. Somewhere in this tangle, one set of headlights is carrying someone through exactly that kind of evening, and the work does not ask you to find it. It only asks you to notice how little difference it makes, from this height, which one it was.

"From far enough away, even rush hour looks like rest."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/0724/0005/files/A_Tangle_Lit_by_Thousands_thumbnail.jpg?v=1792313517
