a-shroud-woven-from-light
A Shroud Woven From Light

A Shroud Woven From Light keeps only what the dark allows to survive. A bowed head wrapped in cloth, a bare shoulder catching the last of the light, a fall of drapery gathered at the waist, all of it drawn out of black as a field of fine scratches rather than a photograph of a body. Everything else, the room, the ground, the rest of the figure, is simply let go, absorbed back into the untouched surface.

The light does not explain this figure, it interrupts it. It gathers most densely across the veiled skull and the folded shoulder, where the marks sit close enough to read as skin and cloth, and it thins toward the waist until the drapery becomes little more than a suggestion, a memory of form still holding its shape in the dark. Between those two states, glowing and gone, the whole image lives.

There is something quietly classical in the pose, a figure wrapped the way old sculpture wraps its mourners and its gods, face hidden, shoulder turned away, as if caught between being seen and being spared from it. The veil reads as both covering and erasure, a shroud that protects the face from the room and, at the same time, from us.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, formed through a field of individual marks and controlled surface damage rather than pigment laid on top of it. The figure is always present, not summoned by a lamp or lost in daylight. Direct light simply lets the scratches catch and reflect, so the contrast deepens and the shoulder seems to lift further out of the dark. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the image.

A Shroud Woven From Light continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. This work is unique.

"Light does not create the figure here. It only shows how much of it has already returned to the dark."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/0724/0005/files/A_Shroud_Woven_From_Light_thumbnail.jpg?v=1793570703
