a-ring-scratched-into-green
A Ring Scratched Into Green

At first glance it could be a sun, or an eye looking back. Look closer and the pattern reveals itself as something smaller and more familiar, the cross section of a single kiwi, its ring of seeds turned into a corona of dots, its pale flesh into a field of radiating light. A Ring Scratched Into Green takes the quiet interior of a fruit and lets it become a whole cosmos.

Green carries the piece. It is the color of the fruit's own flesh, the color of things still growing, and here it becomes the color of the glass itself. The image is not placed on top of that green, it is taken out of it, so the fruit and the material holding it speak the same language before a single mark is made.

Nothing here is painted, printed or added. The contour of the fruit and the ring of seeds are formed by controlled scratches worked directly into the coloured mirror glass, thick lines holding the shape, a field of fine marks catching the light only on the side the light would naturally fall. The rest of the fruit stays dark, left to the glass, so the image is built as much from what is withheld as from what is drawn.

The image is always there. It does not need direct light to exist, and it never disappears as you move past it. What light changes is depth: under a stronger light the scratches gather more shine and the contrast between the radiating seeds and the black core deepens, while in softer light the same ring settles quietly into the surface. Light does not create the image. It sharpens it.

Because the surface is mirror glass, the room comes with it. Stand in front of the work and your own reflection settles into the dark spaces between the seeds, so the ring is never just fruit and glass, it is fruit, glass and whoever is standing there looking. From across a room the piece reads as one clean, glowing circle. Close up, that circle dissolves into a field of individual marks, each one part of a whole that only holds together at a distance.

A Ring Scratched Into Green continues the Art on Mirror series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which scratched imagery is set into coloured mirror glass and the viewer becomes part of the work. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure, and where the mirror turns looking into taking part.

"A seed ring turned into light, held in green glass that remembers where it came from."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/0724/0005/files/A_Ring_Scratched_Into_Green_thumbnail.jpg?v=1791705158
