a-ring-scratched-from-totality
A Ring Scratched From Totality

There is one moment, brief and absolute, when the sun vanishes and something older takes its place. A Ring Scratched From Totality holds that moment still. At its center, a disc of pure black, complete and unreadable. Around it, a ring of light that does not shine so much as burn, ragged at the edges, alive.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, formed by a field of individual marks that catch and hold the light the way the corona itself catches the last of the sun. The image is not applied onto the surface, it is taken from it, built through removal rather than addition.

Totality is the moment the world goes quiet. The familiar disappears, and what remains is the thing we could never see before, the halo the sun wears in secret every day. This work asks what is revealed when the obvious is blotted out, and whether the truest light only becomes visible once the source itself is hidden.

The image is always present in the acrylic glass, whether the room is bright or dim. Light does not create it. It sharpens it. Under a direct source the ring deepens, the scratches catch and reflect, and the contrast intensifies, while the black disc at its heart stays absolute, a silence nothing can touch. It reads differently from every angle, without ever losing the image.

From across a room it reads as a single quiet event, sun and shadow locked together. Up close it dissolves into a field of fine scratches, each one a small, deliberate mark, together forming something that feels less made than grown, like frost on glass or light itself scored into the material.

A Ring Scratched From Totality continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure. This work is unique.

"What the eye cannot hold, the surface remembers."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/0724/0005/files/A_Ring_Scratched_From_Totality_thumbnail.jpg?v=1792958880
