a-ribbon-of-white-falling
A Ribbon of White Falling

She leans forward out of the black, caught in the instant before the pail runs empty. Her headcloth, her face, the turn of her shoulders arrive first, a quiet field of points gathering into a figure who is entirely present and entirely still.

What the work keeps is the labor of her hands and the weight of her attention: the wrap around her hair, the fold of her collar, the forearms resting on the rim as she watches the pour. These are built from depth, not addition, a field of individual marks standing in for form the way memory stands in for a moment already gone.

What it lets go is almost everything else. The room behind her has no walls, no window, no floor, only the dark that any Void work insists on. Even the milk itself, the very reason for her gesture, is allowed to nearly vanish, a few scattered points tracing where a white ribbon once fell before the surface chooses to say no more.

The rim of the vat is the one place that holds unbroken light, a bright ring circling the whole composition, while what lies inside it, the pooled milk, the depth of the vessel, is surrendered entirely to black. The thing being poured becomes the thing withheld, and that withholding is the image.

From across a room the work reads as a single dark plane, monumental and silent, barely announcing the figure it holds. Only on approach does it open into a field of depth, point by point, the dairymaid reappearing as the light shifts and the eye moves closer.

Beneath the domestic gesture sits an older story, the quiet dignity of unseen work, nourishment given without ceremony, a ritual repeated so often it fades into habit rather than being noticed. This work continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print. A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence.

"What she pours, the work will not keep. What she is, it holds entirely."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/0724/0005/files/A_Ribbon_of_White_Falling_thumbnail.jpg?v=1788738599
