a-pear-held-in-green
A Pear Held in Green

A single pear hangs in a deep green void, caught by light that falls from one side only. Its stem rises thin and taut, the one leaf beside it traced in fine, veined lines, while the body of the fruit keeps most of itself in darkness, only a narrow rim and the soft curve of a shoulder catching the light. It is a quiet subject, and that quiet is the point.

The image is shaped through removal, not addition. A field of individual marks is formed into the surface of deep green coloured mirror glass, so the pear exists only where the material has been opened to light. The rest of the fruit stays solid, held back, left for the eye to complete. Green carries its own meaning here, the colour of growth and quiet persistence, of fruit still holding to the branch.

The glass is never only a surface for the image. Around the pear and between the fine scratches, the room folds back into view, soft walls, the shape of a viewer standing close. That reflection moves as the room moves, so no two people stand before this pear and see quite the same thing, even though the pear itself never changes.

From across a room the work reads as one suspended form, monumental in its stillness. Up close it dissolves into a field of fine scratches, each one part of the whole, none of them explaining itself. The image is always present, with or without direct light falling on it. Light does not create the pear. It sharpens what is already there, deepens the contrast between the bright rim and the dark body it clings to.

A pear held mostly in shadow, stem and leaf still catching the light, is a modest way of asking how much of a thing needs to be visible before it is still whole. This work continues the Art on Mirror series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which scratched imagery is set into coloured mirror glass and the viewer becomes part of the work, a visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure, and where the mirror turns looking into taking part.

"Held by light, kept by shadow."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.
