a-pawns-borrowed-crown
A Pawn's Borrowed Crown

A Pawn's Borrowed Crown holds a single moment of quiet theater. One pawn stands in a hard side light, small and plain, while the wall behind it carries something else entirely, the tall, commanding shadow of a queen. The piece itself has not changed. Only the light has, and in that light it becomes, for a moment, something it is not.

No paint. No print. No ink. The pawn and its borrowed shadow are built from a field of individual marks scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass. The image is always present, seen from across a room or from a step away, long before the eye separates the small figure from the towering shape behind it.

Light does not create the image. It sharpens it. Under a direct source the scratches catch and hold the glow, the contrast deepens, and the round head of the pawn sits against a silhouette that dwarfs it. Step to the side and the work settles, quieter, trading its drama for calm, the image never lost, only read differently.

There is a story in the shape of that shadow. A pawn is the piece with the least power on the board, the one spent first, yet here its outline throws the shadow of a queen, the piece with the most. The work asks a simple, unsettling question, whether the crown is earned, or only cast by the angle of the light that happens to fall on you.

From across the room it reads as a single, monumental gesture, a lone figure and its outsized reflection on a dark wall. Up close that gesture dissolves into a field of fine scratches, each one too small on its own to carry any meaning at all.

A Pawn's Borrowed Crown continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"Every piece believes, for a while, in the shadow it casts."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.
