a-horn-held-in-points
A Horn Held in Points

A rhinoceros does not announce itself. It arrives slowly, the way weight arrives, the way old things arrive, and here it is held almost entirely in light. The head and shoulder gather into a dense field of depth, while the far side of the body thins until it is barely a suggestion, then gone. One leg stands firm in the field. The other has already stepped into the dark and is not given back.

Nothing here was added. No paint, no print, no ink. The folds of the skin, the curve of the ear, the single eye set like a quiet stone, all of it is built from a field of individual marks, voids in the surface that only resolve into form when light finds them from above. Turn the light, change your distance, and the animal softens back toward absence.

From across a room the work is monumental and still, a silhouette standing in its own quiet. Walk closer and the silhouette breaks into a field of depth, point by point, the way skin itself is made of small things repeated until they read as hide, as armor, as age.

The horn carries the piece. It is drawn with the fewest marks of all, tapering into near nothing at its tip, as if the animal's whole bearing is concentrated into one line of light held against the dark. An old symbol of strength that has always also marked it for harm, shown here as something that could vanish as easily as it appears.

This is a study of mass without weight, of armor built from air. The rhinoceros has outlived ages it was never meant to survive, and the work treats that endurance the way it treats the body itself, as something present only because the dark has, for now, let it be seen.

A Horn Held in Points continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print. A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence.

"What remains is only what the light was willing to give back."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.
