a-fall-scratched-from-feathers
A Fall Scratched From Feathers

A young body falls head first out of absolute black, arms thrown wide, and the surface keeps only what the light would have caught: the long stretch of each arm, the ridge of two wings, the quiet plane of a face that has not changed its expression on the way down. Everything else stays with the dark. That choice is the whole picture.

The wings are already leaving him. Where a sculptor's feathers would have stayed fixed to marble, here the top edge breaks into a scatter of small bright shapes drifting upward, as if the fall were shaking him loose from his own form. A field of fine scratches builds each feather and each plane of the body, so that up close the figure dissolves into individual marks and only resolves into a man again at a distance, the way a constellation only reads as a shape from far enough back.

The face is the quiet center of the piece. It is not afraid. While the wings scatter and the arms reach for nothing, the features hold their stillness, calm the way classical sculpture is calm, composed the way a body is composed before it understands it has already let go. That gap between what the pose is doing and what the face allows to show is where the work lives.

No paint, no print, no ink. The image is built from controlled scratches worked into the surface of the acrylic glass, a field of individual marks standing in for marble, for feather, for falling dust. The image is always present, in daylight as in shadow. Light does not create it. It sharpens it, so the contrast deepens under a direct source and the figure reads differently from different angles without ever losing its shape.

A Fall Scratched From Feathers belongs to The Unmaking, a series within Art with Scratch by Tijs Dragtsma in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print, and in which that same damage becomes a way of asking what composure looks like in the instant a body lets go of the very thing that once let it rise. This work is unique.

"He is not falling apart. He is only falling, and he has decided to do it well."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/0724/0005/files/A_Fall_Scratched_From_Feathers_thumbnail.jpg?v=1793570873
