a-door-open-no-one-leaves
A Door Open, No One Leaves

A birdcage stands alone on an empty plain, large enough to hold a man. Its door is open. Inside, he sits on the threshold, head tilted upward. Outside, on the dome's highest bar, a bird has landed and stayed. Neither one moves toward the other's place.

The scene is stripped of weight and shadow. Likeness and texture fall away into black, and what remains is drawn back out of the surface itself, a field of individual marks across the acrylic glass that gathers into cage, man, bird and the long reach of ground between them.

The dome and its bars hold the brightest concentration of scratches, so the structure reads as a cage built from light rather than metal. The man stays dark, a silhouette withheld from that brightness, sitting exactly where the open door would let him pass. The ground around the cage carries its own quiet storm of fine lines, catching the eye and leading it back, again and again, to the one figure who stays still.

Nothing in the image explains why the door is open and the man remains. That is the point. A cage with no lock is still a cage if no one tests it. The bird, free to leave at any moment, chooses the highest bar instead of the sky. Captivity here is not the bars. It is the stillness on both sides of them.

The image is always present in the acrylic glass, it does not need light to exist. Light does not create it. It sharpens it, deepens the contrast between the glowing field of scratches and the dark shapes cut from it, and lets the work read differently depending on where you stand.

A Door Open, No One Leaves continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"Some doors stay open because closing them was never the problem."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/0724/0005/files/A_Door_Open__No_One_Leaves_thumbnail.jpg?v=1792313445
