a-diamond-traced-in-rope
A Diamond Traced in Rope

A Diamond Traced in Rope begins where the camera's detail ends. The body that once filled the frame with soft gradients of skin is let go, and in its place a field of fine scratches gathers into light, holding only the shape that matters: shoulders, the rise of the chest, the taper of the waist. What remains is not a photograph remembered, it is a body rebuilt out of marks.

At the center, the rope keeps its exact geometry. Where the braid once pressed into flesh, the surface stays dark and untouched, so the diamond reads as a clean absence cut through a field of glow. The contrast is the whole composition, skin turned to light, binding turned to shadow, the two trading places to describe a single gesture of containment.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built by removal rather than addition, so the woman's form seems to rise out of the material itself rather than sit on top of it.

The image is always present. Light does not create it, it sharpens it. Under a direct source the scratches catch and the contrast deepens, the diamond pattern tightening into focus, while the dark passages stay dark and holding. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the body at its center.

From across a room the work settles into a single luminous torso, quiet and monumental. Close up, that same torso dissolves into a field of individual marks, each one too small to carry meaning alone, together forming a pattern as deliberate as the knots it traces. The rope becomes a question about what binds a body and what a body chooses to hold.

This work continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print.

"A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.
