a-contour-held-in-red
A Contour Held in Red

There is a shape almost everyone already knows before they even see the word beside it: the curve of a bottle, the narrow neck, the half familiar sweep of a script logotype caught mid read. Here that shape is reduced to pure contour, held as a field of fine scratches in deep red mirror glass.

Nothing is painted and nothing is printed. The image exists because material has been taken away, not added, a field of individual marks cut into the coloured mirror glass until the bottle, its beaded droplets and its half spelled lettering emerge as light pulled out of the surrounding dark.

Red carries its own meaning in this piece. It is the colour of the brand itself, the colour of thirst and appetite, of a sign so saturated into daily life that a glimpse of the shape is often enough, the word barely needed. Set into red mirror glass, the bottle stops reading as a product and starts reading as a modern icon, something closer to myth than to merchandise.

The work is always present, with or without direct light. Light does not create the image. It sharpens it. Under a gallery spot the scratches catch and reflect, and the contrast deepens, while in softer light the same contour holds steady, quieter but never gone. What changes with the room is only the reflection around the bottle, never the bottle itself.

Seen from across a room, the composition reads as one monumental shape, instantly recognisable. Move closer and that certainty dissolves into a field of individual marks, a surface that also holds the room itself: the walls, the spotlights, the floor, the viewer standing in front of it, folded into the red behind the glass. Looking at the work means becoming part of it.

A Contour Held in Red continues the Art on Mirror series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which scratched imagery is set into coloured mirror glass and the viewer becomes part of the work. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure, and where the mirror turns looking into taking part.

"Some shapes don't need the word beside them to be read."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.
