a-cluster-held-in-red
A Cluster Held in Red

A single raspberry hangs in a field of nothing, its small crown of leaves lifted as if caught mid breath. There is no table beneath it, no hand holding it, no context at all. Only the fruit, alone, suspended in the deep red glass that holds it.

Light falls from one side only. Each small round bead of the fruit catches a tiny crescent of brightness, then gives way to shadow on the other side, the way ripeness always carries its own quiet decline inside it. Fine hairs along the outline catch the light first, a soft static around a solid, private darkness.

Red is the colour of the fruit itself, its flesh, its ripeness, the warmth just under the skin. Here it becomes the colour of the whole room the work hangs in, so the fruit is not simply shown in red, it is held by it, the way a single sensation can colour an entire moment.

Nothing here was painted or printed on. The image exists because the surface was taken away in a field of fine scratches, worked into deep red coloured mirror glass until the raspberry stood out of the red. It is monumental from across the room and, up close, resolves into a field of individual marks, each one part of a larger, quieter pattern.

The glass is still a mirror. Around the fruit and between the marks, the room folds back, the walls, the light fixtures, whoever is standing in front of it. The viewer is never only looking in, they are reflected inside the same red field the fruit occupies, briefly part of the same held moment.

Light does not create this image. It sharpens it, deepens the contrast, lets the crescents on each small bead glow a little more. The picture itself never leaves, only the room around it keeps shifting and returning.

A Cluster Held in Red continues the Art on Mirror series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which scratched imagery is set into coloured mirror glass and the viewer becomes part of the work. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure, and where the mirror turns looking into taking part.

"One small fruit, held whole in red, asking nothing but to be seen."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.
