The image is not applied onto the surface, it is formed by removal, a field of individual marks worked directly into coloured mirror glass until a shape steps forward from the void around it. What you see is not a picture placed on red, it is red with something taken away from it, and that taking away is the entire language of the work.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFrom across the room the cap reads as a single luminous silhouette, monumental against the dark, almost architectural in its calm. Move closer and that certainty dissolves into a field of individual scratches, grass blades, gill lines, the fine static of light on a stem, each mark doing almost nothing alone and everything together.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRed carries its own weight here. It is the colour of warning and of appetite, the colour that makes a small thing in the forest impossible to ignore, and it turns this modest fungus into something closer to an alarm, or an invitation, depending on how long you stay with it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe glass never stops being a mirror. The gallery around the piece, its walls, its lights, whoever is standing in front of it, all fall into the red surface between and around the marks, so the room and the viewer become part of the same field the mushroom grows from. You are not looking at the work from a safe distance. You are already inside it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLight does not create this image. It sharpens it. Under a direct beam the scratches catch and hold, the contrast deepens, the cap seems to lift further from the red, but the mushroom itself never disappears and never needs permission to be seen.
