a-back-turned-to-stone
A Back Turned to Stone

A man's back fills the frame, turned away, bent under some private weight. His shoulder blades rise like outcrops of rock, worn smooth by wind and years, while a single hard light falls from above and carves muscle and bone into something closer to geology than portraiture.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built from controlled scratches and controlled surface damage rather than pigment. What reads as skin, shadow and stone is in fact an absence, a form drawn by taking material away.

The image is always present, visible even in soft, ambient light. Direct light does not create it. It sharpens it. Under a stronger source the scratches catch and reflect, the contrast deepens, and the back seems to gain weight and dimension. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the image.

There is something quietly monumental about a body seen only from behind. We are left to imagine the face, the labor, the years that shaped this posture. The title suggests a slow petrification, a body hardened by carrying too much for too long, caught at the edge between flesh and stone.

Seen from across a room, the figure reads as a single monumental mass set against pure black. Move closer and that mass dissolves into a field of fine scratches, grain and drifting dust, each mark part of a surface that never stops being an image, never stops being damage.

A Back Turned to Stone continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"Some weights do not bend a man. They turn him to stone."

More about the artist, process and materials can be found on the About page.

Questions about this work, availability or shipping can be sent through the contact page.
